On June 6, the Founders Committee hosted approximately 130 guests for its annual spring fundraiser, which raised more than $250,000 to support the upcoming museum exhibit, Becoming Mount Vernon. Since 1980, the group—whose official name is The Founders, Washington Committee for Historic Mount Vernon—has supported a multitude of programs, projects, and publications furthering the MVLA’s mission to preserve Washington’s estate and educate the public about his legacy and virtues. The group’s work has raised more than $3 million while enriching the Mount Vernon experience.
Slated to open in early 2022 to commemorate the 290th anniversary of Washington's birth, the museum exhibit, Becoming Mount Vernon will highlight the history of Mount Vernon and the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, emphasizing the many people involved in building, shaping, and preserving the estate. On view will be more than 350 objects from its collection.
Guests enjoyed cocktails on the east lawn and viewed recently acquired Washington treasures from the Peter Family Collection that will be prominently displayed within the upcoming exhibit. It was a wonderful evening to be back at the estate for the most successful Founders event to date.
