Preserving “Little” Washington: Mount Vernon members joined Michelin three-star chef Patrick O’Connell, founder of the Inn at Little Washington, in conversation with Mount Vernon’s president Doug Bradburn about the iconic chef’s efforts to preserve a small town’s architectural history over the last 42 years in “Little” Washington, Virginia, where as a young surveyor George Washington first named the streets back in 1749. Constitutional conversation: Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, joined Kevin Butterfield, Washington Library executive director, in advance of Constitution Day to speak exclusively to Mount Vernon members about the world-altering significance of the document’s creation in 1787, as well as ongoing efforts to educate the public. GW and TJ, channeled: Monticello and Mount Vernon partnered to bring the public a live Q&A featuring Thomas Jefferson (interpreted by Bill Barker) and George Washington (interpreted by Dean Malissa). (August 25)
Deconstructing Hamilton: Joanne Freeman, professor of history and American studies at Yale University and a leading expert on Alexander Hamilton, spoke during a Hamilton-themed members-only livestream following the release of the hit musical on Disney+. (July 20)
The butler speaks: Frank Lee (interpreted by Reggie Richard), one of the enslaved men who worked as a butler for the Washingtons, told stories and answered audience questions during a public livestream. (July 16)
Tracing the family tree: Genealogist and family historian Steve Hammond joined Mount Vernon’s Brenda Parker, character interpreter and African American interpretation and special projects coordinator, for a public livestream on the Syphax family lineage and its connections to historic sites in the area, including Mount Vernon. (July 10)
Hamilton’s George Washington in the house: Star of stage and screen Christopher Jackson joined a members-only livestream to share what it was like playing George Washington in one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons in history—the Broadway musical Hamilton. (July 6)
